Bain Fallon Annual Awards

Nominations and submissions are now open for the following awards. These awards will be presented at the Bain Fallon Memorial Lectures in July.

EVA Award for Excellence in the Equine Veterinary Field
Sponsored by Provet 
This award is open to EVA members who have shown leadership and enterprise, made contributions to knowledge (particularly at the research and post-graduate level), been involved in delivering post graduate education and have made a significant contribution to the equine veterinary profession. Publications of scientific papers or post-graduate advancement will be considered favourably.
The prize is a perpetual trophy and also includes complimentary registration to Bain Fallon, airfare, accommodation and the Gala Dinner.
EVA Award for Services to the Horse Industry
Sponsored by EVA 
This award will be given to a person who has made a major contribution to the Australian horse industry through leadership, enterprise and service to the betterment of horses, their owners and the community.
The prize is a perpetual trophy and also includes a complimentary day registration to the Bain Fallon Memorial Lectures, airfare, one nights’ accommodation and the Bain Fallon Gala Dinner.
EVA President’s Prize
Sponsored by EVA 
This award is open to members of EVA Young Members Group. They must be active in the YMG, attend and participate in Bain Fallon, and have demonstrated leadership in their profession and the equine industry.
The prize is $300 and an inscribed medallion. EVA is grateful for the support from past President, Dr Ken Jacobs, in initiating this award.
Nominations for these awards should be received no later than Friday 29 April 2011.
Papers and Posters
Abstracts for clinical papers and poster presentations to be made at the 2011 Bain Fallon Memorial Lectures are now being accepted.
EVA Reginald R Pascoe Prize
Sponsored by Ceva Animal Health 
This award is open to EVA members, with the qualifications set out below, who present the best short clinical or research paper at the ‘Clinical Papers’ session during the Bain Fallon Memorial Lectures.
Candidates must hold specialist qualifications (Fellowship or Diplomate of a Specialist Veterinary College) and specialist registration or advanced research degrees (for example, MVSc, PhD, DVSc). All candidates must be registered to attend Bain Fallon.
The topic may include any clinical or research project wholly involved with horses. The judging panel will consider subject matter, presentation and practical application or extension of knowledge of material. Presenters must provide a one page abstract for publication in The Australian Equine Veterinarian.
Interested applicants are asked to submit abstracts for the presentation no later than Friday 18 March 2011.
The prize for the EVA Reginald R Pascoe Prize is $300.
EVA Norman Larkin Prize
Sponsored by Virbac Australia 
This award is open to EVA members, except for those members with the specialist qualifications eligible for the Reginald Pascoe Prize referred to above, who present the best short clinical or research papers at the ‘Clinical Papers’ session during the Bain Fallon Memorial Lectures 2010.
The topic may include any clinical or research project entirely or exclusively involved with horses. The judging panel will consider subject matter, presentation and practical application or extension of knowledge of material. Presenters must provide a one page abstract for publication in The Australian Equine Veterinarian.
Interested applicants are asked to submit abstracts for the presentation no later than Friday 18 March 2011.
The prize for the EVA Norman Larkin Prize is $300.
EVA Poster Award
Sponsored by Ausrichter 
This award is open to EVA members who produce a poster for presentation at the Bain Fallon Memorial Lectures. The posters may cover any topic in equine veterinary science. Posters must be the original work of the member. They can be a case study or summary of recent work and should contain some innovative information, or an advancement of knowledge for the equine veterinary profession.
At least one of the authors of the poster must be registered to attend Bain Fallon and be present to meet with the judging panel.
Poster size should be ‘B0’ 1000mm (W) x 1414mm (H).
Interested applicants are asked to submit expressions of interest including poster topic no later than Friday 24 June 2011.
The prize for the EVA Poster Award is $400.
YMG Poster Award
Sponsored by BOVA
This award is open to EVA Young Members who produce a poster for presentation at the Bain Fallon Memorial Lectures. The poster can be presented by an individual or a group of young members.
The posters may cover any topic in equine veterinary science that involves new research or information pertaining to the advancement of the equine veterinary profession. This may include case reports or research projects. Students are encouraged to have their supervised co-author present when the posters are being judged.
At least one of the authors of the poster must be registered to attend Bain Fallon and be present to meet with the judging panel.
Poster size should be ‘B0’ 1000mm (W) x 1414mm (H).
Interested applicants are asked to submit expressions of interest including poster topic no later than Friday 24 2011.
EVA Award in Equine Diagnostic Imaging
Sponsored by DLC Australia 
This award is open to EVA members and will be judged on the basis of an article published in The Australian Equine Veterinarian (AEV) or on a presentation made during the ‘Clinical Papers’ session. The award is given for a study of the clinical or research application of diagnostic imaging (using either a single modality, or a combination of radiology, ultrasound, scintigraphy, computerised tomography, or magnetic resonance imaging) where the results are directly applicable to the clinical practice of equine diagnostic imaging.
The award will be judged by the Editor of the AEV in consultation with the judging panel appointed at Bain Fallon.
Interested applicants are asked to submit abstracts for the presentation by Friday 18 March 2011.
The prize for the EVA Award in Equine Diagnostic Imaging is $500 and a trophy.
EVA Award in Equine Anaesthesia & Intensive Care
Sponsored by Advanced Anaesthesia Specialists 
This award is open to EVA members and will be judged on the basis of an article published in The Australian Equine Veterinarian (AEV) or on a presentation made during the ‘Clinical Papers’ session. Topics may include anaesthesia, pain management, or intensive/critical care. The article or presentation should be on a research study, a case series (more than five) involving clinical applications of these modalities, or a statistically valid epidemiological study of the use of these treatment modalities in horses.
The award will be judged by the Editor of the AEV in consultation with the judging panel appointed at Bain Fallon.
Interested applicants are asked to submit abstracts for the presentation by Friday 18 March 2011.
The prize for the EVA Award in Equine Anaesthesia and Intensive Care is $300.

The paper will be of scientific interest and may provide documented evidence of the author’s experience. The paper should provide new information about a common condition; or describe multiple observations about a new condition; or report on new means of diagnosis or treatment either experimental or in the field; or describe a new disease ensuring that all possible diagnostic tests are documented as an aid to other practitioners; or describe multiple observations can be analysed retrospectively and presented as a clinical paper providing they contribute to increasing the area of new information.

Young Members’ Bain Fallon Scholarships

The scholarship is open to EVA Young Members involved in the equine industry who can demonstrate outstanding ability and commitment to their profession.
- Applicants should ideally demonstrate an involvement in, and commitment to, the horse industry and/or AVA, either through their professional life, or as a university student (applicants may give examples of their specific involvement in the horse industry and use supporting references where appropriate).
- Applicants should ideally demonstrate an interest in pursuing educational opportunities relevant to equine veterinary work (applicants may give examples of equine specific veterinary studies undertaken and note where they have acquired or are acquiring relevant qualifications or experience).
- Applicants should ideally demonstrate an intention to further develop and continue career opportunities in the equine veterinary profession (applicants may give examples of proposed or completed work experience gained in an equine specific field and provide references where appropriate).
EVA is calling for applications to be received no later than Friday 18 March 2011.
