Young Members

EVA has a subgroup of members that are designated the EVA Young Members Group (YMG).

These are EVA members that are recent graduates up to three years out of university and all veterinary undergraduate EVA student members. EVA has approximately 250 Young Members (and growing!) that form the most valuable future "human asset" of our profession and association. EVA takes a special interest in fostering and growing its Young Member Group, and there are a number of programmes and initiatives that EVA provide specifically for Young Members.

The areas of support that EVA provides are:

EVA provides access to discounted and subsidised continuing education for Young Members. EVA places great importance upon the need to provide training and support to its members and is focussed on offering opportunities to Young Members to assist them with their professional development and successful integration into the profession.

EVA runs Young Member seminars, workshops and clinical sessions that are specifically suited for young equine veterinarians. The aim of these workshops and seminars is to provide "hands on" opportunities for young vets to learn under the close direction of senior practitioners and demonstrators. The main continuing education event is the EVA Annual Conference, the Bain Fallon Memorial Lectures. The Bain Fallon has an international reputation as the leading equine veterinary conference in the southern hemisphere, and regularly attracts speakers who are world experts in their field.

EVA runs a Young Member Mentoring Program. EVA recognises that transition to the veterinary work place after graduation represents a time of considerable change in life style for Young Members of the profession and that they might need assistance and advice to help them during this transition. The EVA Young Member Mentor Program is designed to provide this assistance and advice.

EVA has a commitment to fostering social interaction, bonding, and cameraderie between Young Members and the profession. During each year EVA organises social functions and outings for EVA Young Members to attend and enjoy. EVA also holds an annual Young Member Dinner (free food and drink!!!) for all those Young Members that are attending and helping at the EVA Annual Conference.

EVA's newest initiative is the the Jurox Bain Fallon Scholarships for Young Members. One of the key objectives of EVA is to offer professional development opportunities to members. The Scholarship is open to six EVA Young Members involved in the equine industry who can demonstrate outstanding ability and commitment to their profession. The Scholarship will provide Young Members with complimentary registration and accommodation at the EVA Annual conference each year.

Introducing your EVA Young Member President - Dr Amy Williamson

Amy graduated from the University of Queensland in 2008. During her student years she was heavily involved with the UQ Veterinary Students Equine Association, and first became involved with EVA. Her first year in practice was spent as a busy intern at Goulburn Valley Equine Hospital in Victoria, gaining broad experience in medicine, surgery, anaesthesia and reproduction. Following her internship, Amy has been working in predominantly racetrack practice at Warwick Farm Equine Centre, on the outskirts of Sydney. Whilst still being fascinated by all aspects of equine veterinary science, this position has enabled her to focus on current interests in lameness and imaging. As a 2009 Jurox Bain Fallon Scholarship recipient, Amy discovered firsthand the enthusiasm and camaraderie EVA creates for equine veterinary professionals. As a result, she is very much looking forward to her EVA involvement as this year’s YMG President!
